The WooCommerce vs. Shopify debate is usually argued by people selling one of the two. I build stores on both, so I don’t need either to win — I need your store to fit your business. Here’s the comparison I give my own clients.
Shopify: rent a excellent machine
- Strengths: checkout that converts, hosting/security included, apps for everything, hard to break.
- Costs: monthly fee (from ~US$29) + transaction fees + paid apps that add up. Over 3–5 years, meaningfully more than WooCommerce.
- Trade-off: it’s a rental. Custom checkout logic, unusual pricing models or full data portability hit platform walls.
WooCommerce: own the machine
- Strengths: complete ownership, no transaction fees, unlimited customization — B2B price lists, custom checkout fields, any payment provider (including local ones Shopify doesn’t support).
- Costs: hosting (~US$10–30/mo) and a developer when something needs changing. The software itself is free.
- Trade-off: updates and backups are your responsibility — in practice, your developer’s.
My decision rule
Choose Shopify if you sell straightforward products, want minimal involvement, and accept monthly fees as the price of peace. Choose WooCommerce if you already run WordPress, need custom logic or local payment providers, sell B2B, or hate the idea of your store living on rented land. And if your “store” is really 5–10 products next to a content site — WooCommerce, almost always.
Either way, the build quality decides
An abandoned cart doesn’t care which platform you chose; it cares that the product page loaded slowly or the checkout confused people. I build both — custom WooCommerce stores and Shopify setups — with the same standard as everything in my portfolio: custom design, 90+ PageSpeed target, and you editing your own products from day one. Store packages are on the hire page, and my Fiverr reviews (4.9★, 227 orders) include plenty of store owners.
FAQ
Which is cheaper long-term, WooCommerce or Shopify?
WooCommerce usually wins over 3+ years (no monthly platform or transaction fees), provided you have a developer for occasional maintenance.
Can I migrate from Shopify to WooCommerce later?
Products and customers: yes, with proper export/import. Design and apps must be rebuilt — which is why choosing right initially matters.
Is WooCommerce secure enough for payments?
Yes — payments run through the same certified providers (Stripe, PayPal, iyzico, etc.); card data never touches your server.
